Mike Schoonveld is a "Pro"    Visit us on Facebook  Read Capt. Mike's Blog

Mike started fishing Lake Michigan in 1969 as a sport angler and he's now sharing his fishing talents and years of experience by operating a Lake Michigan guide service, calledCaptain Mike Schoonveld Brother Nature Fishing Adventures.

Capt. Mike is currently an officer of Indiana's North Coast Charter Association. This responsibility proves the respect for Schoonveld's professional character from the other captains making up the group. Mike is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Great Lakes Sport Fishing Council. In 2015 Capt. Mike was elected to the Board of Directors of the National Association of Charterboat Operators. NACO is the largest organization in the country representing America's charter industry from Alaska to the Florida Keys.

Before Mike started chartering, he and his crew entered numerous amateur salmon fishing derbies. The Brother Nature Fishing Team was always a top contender in the contests in which they competed.

"I call it an adventure because I think any fishing trip - especially one to Indiana's own Great Lake - should be more than just a fishing trip. I keep the guests on my boat informed about what I'm doing - and why - and I show them how to handle the gear and choose (and set!) their own lures, if that's what they want. Novice anglers get the advantage of my experience, and experienced anglers get the fun of catching Lake Michigan salmon and trout, personally."

Schoonveld is a Certified Wildlife Biologist, a member of the Outdoor Writers Association of America, Hoosier Outdoor Writers, The Wildlife Society, The National Geographic Society. Lake County Fish and Game Protection Association, Salmon Unlimited, ISTA, NRA, DU, Pheasants Forever and other conservation groups.

Professionalism Counts!

Click here for a closer view. The road to becoming a "charter" captain isn't easy. A comprehensive licensing exam administered by the U.S. Coast Guard must be passed, along with classes in First Aid and CPR. Licensing by the Indiana DNR is required, along with annual boat inspections requiring seaworthiness, specific safety gear, proof of liability insurance and other qualifications. Captain Mike holds a Masters License and the Brother Nature has passed all the inspections. Beware of discount offers from unlicensed charter operators...   you just may get what you paid for!
